Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at kelli@themindfulloaf.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The stand is located at 96 Dyer Bay Rd, in Steuben ME. Rather than having a storefront, there is a self serve "bread shed" located next to the driveway that operates on the honor system. You can order ahead online (which we highly encourage) and your order will be available for pickup from the stand on the next bake day anytime after 10am, or you can come by and see what items are available on a first come, first serve basis. The selection of first come, first serve items varies daily.

The stand is stocked with freshly baked goods every Tuesday and Saturday morning and is open on those days from 10am until dusk, or until it is empty (whichever comes first). The stand is also open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays stocked with items from the most recent day's baking session at a discounted price but this is highly dependent on what is remaining for inventory - for the most up to date info on whether the stand is open on non-bake days, please see our Facebook page! If the stand is open on a Monday or Thursday it operates on a "take what you need, pay what you can" payment system.

NOTE - for the winter months, we bake on Saturdays only and will not be open on Tuesdays.

If the stand is open on a Monday or Thursday it operates on a "take what you need, pay what you can" payment system on those days only and it is stocked with the leftover items from the most recent morning's bake. What "pay what you can" means will vary from person to person, and only you can decide that for yourself - I definitely encourage families in need to come and help themselves, but I also appreciate those who can/do contribute financially in any amount as that helps keep the cycle turning (as much as I am honored to be able to help those in need, we do also rely on our bakes to provide for us as this is the full-time job for both of us!). We suggest 50% of the item's marked price as a financial contribution for anyone who is able to.

My only request is that those who visit are considerate that there may also be others in need, and please don't clean the stand out of everything all at once (and only take items you intend to eat, we don't like food waste!) - and to please pay this kindness forward someday however you are able to.

PLEASE NOTE - on other days marked prices apply to all items in the stand. "Take what you need, pay what you can" only applies on Mondays and Thursdays.

No - we do stock the stand with a limited variety of items on each bake day that are available on a first come, first serve basis, but it is highly recommended that you order ahead if you would like something specific, or if you would like a certain quantity of an item. The variety of extra items that are available is different from day to day, and sometimes quantities are quite limited.

The short answer - maybe, send a message or email to ask.

The long answer - while we try our best to accommodate requests to have orders ready before 10am, there are reasons why 10am is the usual earliest pickup time. We bake everything the morning of pickup, and we operate from a  home kitchen with only residential appliances. There is a lot to bake each morning and only so much time to do it - and some things have to be baked in a certain order (i.e., all of the bread has to bake first because it takes the longest to cool). So, send a message/email and let us know what you'd like to order and what pickup time you would prefer - and we will let you know if it is possible.

We offer gluten-friendly cookies! What does gluten-friendly mean? Our kitchen is not gluten-free certified, but we can substitute the regular flour with a certified gluten-free flour. However, it is possible that Gluten Friendly items may come into contact with trace amounts of gluten during production.

I currently do not  offer sourdough or other baked goods as gluten-friendly, however due to the long fermentation process of our sourdough (24+ hours), some of those with gluten sensitivities find that they are more easily able to digest our bread than store-bought bread.
